Vermiculite is very efficient at retaining moisture, and in the event of a fire this turns to steam, which has a cooling effect on the steel substrate and thus substantially delays an increase in temperature.
Vermiculite doesn’t have the aesthetically pleasing finish such as intumescent paint or fire retardant board though it can be painted to match its surroundings. What vermiculite lacks in its finish it makes up for in low product costs and a speed of application. ProFinish Coatings most commonly applies CAFCO 300 vermiculite due to its cost and fire rating effectiveness.
ProFinish Coatings is certified in the application of international market leader Promat’s fire protection products and technologies. All Promat products and systems have been tested at nationally accredited laboratories around the world to a variety of standards. For more information see their website.
